The Mount Barker Wine Region of Western Australia

Mt Barker

Mt Barker is the coolest viticulture area in the state. With a history dating back 1965, it is one of the top three Riesling producing regions in Australia and is highly regarded for the quality of its Shiraz. It has also become renowned for the exceptional quality and variety of wines produced from the full, rare premium varieties. Mount Barker hosts over 1000 hectares of vineyards and many and wineries and producers.

Plantagenet Wines

Plantagenet Wines had its first vintages in 1974-1975 and currently offer wine under the labels Plantagenet, Omrah and Hazard Hill.  Under these labels they have Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling.  Their Shiraz is considered to be one of Australia’s best.
Cellar door open 9.00 am – 5.00 pm Monday to Friday and 10.00 am- 4.00 pm weekends. Open public holidays.

Garlands Winery

Established in 1996, Garlands offers Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz.  They also have now established a second label, Barker Hill, which provides excellent value for money.  Their vines date back to the 1980s, although they have only been producing wines themselves for a few years.

Gilberts of Mount Barker

After three generations of Gilberts on the family farm, they set up one of the best vineyards in the Mt Barker region.  They offer Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Their Shiraz is produced from some of the best fruit in the area and is a quality wine.
Cellar door open daily 10.00 am – 5.00 pm.

Galafrey Wines

Originally established in 1977 by Ian Galafrey, producing Rhine Riesling, Unwooded Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz. Unfortunately Ian passed away in 2003 and the wine industry lost one of its greatest characters at that time. The winery is now run by his wife, Linda, and daughter Kim Tyrer.
Cellar door open 10.00 am – 5.00 pm daily.

Jeeleunup Gully Winery

This small vineyard is set amongst grazing land and Jarrah/Marri woodlands in the heart of Western Australia's Great Southern Region and is run by Jan and John Pickles. Since 1985, premium wine grapes have been produced according to biodynamic practices. Liquid preparations, tonnes of organic compost and a small army of marauding (pest-eating) chooks are all part of the approach. Wines are made by Brendan Smith and the focus is onclean, crisp wines that exhibit loads of intense fruit flavour.

Chatsfield Wines

Chatsfield Wines offer a reliable range of wines, being particularly noted for their Riesling, which is consistently good, along with their Chardonnay.  They also offer Cabernet Franc and Shiraz.

Mist Valley Winery

Goundrey Wines

Established by the Goundrey family in the early 1970s and producing its first vintage in 1976 under the name of Michael Goundrey, this winery was bought by Jack Bendat in the mid 1990s and is now one of the biggest wine producers in Mt Barker.  Goundreys offers  a wide range of wines including Chenin Blanc, Classic White, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Reserve Selection Chardonnay and Reserve Selection Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cellar door open 10.00 am – 4.30 pm every day.

Xabregas Winery

A 5 Star winery (James Halliday, 2007 Wine Companion). Xabregas has three vineyards (Fig Tree Lane, The Spencer Vineyard and the Narrikup  Vineyard) totaling 120ha on sites 10kms south of Mount Barker, Western Australia. White varieties planted are Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; and reds include the quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon along with Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Shiraz. Multiple International and Australian awards, most notably for the Reserve Shiraz and Cabernet-Merlot. The future will see further increases in quality, reflecting the philosophy that “great wines are first made in the vineyard”.
Tasting at the cellar door by appointment.

Three Drops Wines

Three Drops is a development that has its origin in the British navy. Property owner Neal Warneford decided, after 20 years in submarines, he wanted a life on the land, so he migrated to WA 30 years ago, to run sheep and cattle. Then four years ago, his two daughters and a son-in-law set about establishing a 15 hectare vineyard as well as more than 2000 olive trees. 'You need water to produce wine and olive oil, so the name Three Drops,' said Neal.
